The Division of Economic Support and Independence focuses on promoting economic stability and independence for single adults and families.

Children's Health Insurance (FAMIS)

FAMIS (Family Access to Medical Insurance Security Plan) is Virginia's children's health insurance program for children under the age of 19, living in families that earn too much to qualify for Medicaid.  FAMIS covers all the medical care growing children might need to avoid getting sick, plus the medical care that will help them if they do get sick or get hurt.

Eligibility

Children may be eligible if they:

  • Live in Virginia;
  • Are under age 19;
  • Are United States citizens or qualified aliens;
  • Are not eligible for FAMIS Plus (also known as Children’s Medicaid); and
  • Live in families meeting FAMIS income guidelines. 

 

Documents You May Need

  • Proof of citizenship;
  • Social Security number;
  • Recent federal tax filing information (if available);
  • Job and income information for household members (pay stubs or W2s);
  • Information about other taxable income for household members: (SS benefits, unemployment,etc.); and
  • Policy numbers for any current health insurance.
