Fulton Gas Works
Things are about to get busy at the site of the old Fulton Gas Works! For years, the City of Richmond's Department of Public Utilities has been engaged in a project to remediate the former industrial property that began producing natural gas for city streetlights over 150 years ago. The project site, located in the east end of Richmond sandwiched between Main St./Rte. 5 and Williamsburg Ave., harkens back to the industrial past of Richmond's riverfront.
Beginning in 2016 with an analysis of the site's soil and groundwater the City has been preparing to undertake an extensive remediation of the property, whose legacy of coal gasification and extensive exposure to rail operations in the days of steam locomotives has left its mark in the subsurface. The first phase of remediation, which included the dismantling of the gasometer, preservation of the emblems from the broiler building and demolition of all above-ground structures, was begun in 2021 and is now complete. The second phase of remediation will include the demolition of the buildings' foundations, removal of subsurface piping and conduit, excavation of soil deemed contaminated and replacement thereof with imported clean soil. Work will begin in January 2025 and is expected to take several months
