Residential trash is collected once per week, Monday through Thursday. It must be placed inside a City-issued supercan. Items placed in non-issued cans or containers will not be collected and a violation notification will be issued. Bagged refuse and boxes will be removed during weekly collection. This is in compliance with the City of Richmond Ordinance Section 86-81 (a)(b).

Note: Supercans must be placed out no earlier than 4 p.m. the day prior to collection and not later than 6 a.m. on collection day. Cans must be removed from City property by 7 a.m. the day after collection, in accordance with City Code Section 86-44.

If you need the identification number for your supercan, please call the Solid Waste Division at (804646-1798.

Back Door Service

We understand sometimes our City’s elderly and/or disabled residents need assistance putting supercans out for trash collection. The Department of Public Works provides “Back Door Service” for those who are eligible. You can review and download the Back Door Service Guidance here. Requests are approved on a case-by-case basis. Please be advised crews will only empty one supercan for those who receive Back Door Service.

Supercans - How to Order Replacements/Business Agreement & Cancellation Form

By City Code, one supercan (Green Can) for solid waste collection is provided to each city residence. Up to (3) three additional cans may be purchased (Brown Can) for $55 each. Cans can be ordered through the 3-1-1- call center or online. The fee will be applied to your Water Utility bill that is in your name. You also may call to request a replacement Supercan if yours is damaged. It may take 7-14 business days for delivery, depending upon availability. Businesses such as churches, apartment complexes, rooming houses, etc., are allowed a maximum of four cans at a cost of $23.75/month per can. Businesses with trash volume requiring a need for more than four cans are required, by City Code, to utilize a private company.

Application and Eligibility for Renter Exemption from Solid Waste and Recycling Fees

You may be eligible for exemption from solid waste and recycling fees. Please read the guidelines and ordinance information below.

City Ordinance, No. 2007-230-275, which was approved by City Council in November of 2007, allows receptacles to be placed on City property or in the public right-of-way no earlier than 4:00 p.m. the day prior to collection and requires the receptacles be removed by 7:00 a.m. the day after collection.

The city of Richmond will issue warnings for trash (refuse) and recycling receptacles left in the public right of way outside of specified collection times. The trash and recycling receptacles used by Richmond residents and businesses will be subject to these warnings. The City's Department of Public Works will place yellow warning stickers on receptacles that must be removed.

Leaving receptacles on public sidewalks, alleys, roads and other city property isn't just unsightly, it also creates unsafe conditions for pedestrians and vehicles.  Please help keep these areas attractive and safe by removing your receptacles outside of the specified collection times.
