The Richmond Police Training Academy


Our current facility was built in 1992 on 3.1 acres of Virginia Union University’s property. The building is approximately 61,625 square feet. There are 3 floors in the Academy that can be accessed by stairway or elevator. The building is handicapped accessible. There are bathrooms on all 3 floors. We have ample parking for up to 184 vehicles and plenty of on street parking. There is an underground parking facility which is restricted to authorized RPD personnel. This area can also be used for training in the event there is inclement weather.
Auditorium (Room 103)

The auditorium (Room 103) can be configured in many different styles to facilitate various functions such as training classes, meetings, presentations, etc. This room’s occupancy is 250. It has audio visual capabilities with 2 projectors and screens, a PA system and laptop. There are several microphones and microphone stands in addition to a portable podium. We have 9 tables that can be set up in this room. They can be used for training meetings where 6 chairs are placed around each or for demonstration materials to be set upon. The stage is 15’ deep x 55’ wide. Food and drink are not allowed in this room. View the Auditorium
Fire Arm’s Training (FATS) Room

The Fire Arm’s Training (FATS) room can seat 38 students and has an interactive FAT system. This room can be configured into several different variations depending on the training.

Firing Range
The Firing Range has 18 lanes of fire with a shooting distance of up to 25 yards. Each lane can be individually controlled at the lane or in the Range Control Room through the computerized system. Any pistol from .22 - .45, shotguns and long guns can be fired in this range. Through the use of 360 degree pivoting targets “Shoot, Don’t Shoot” scenarios can be created. The range can also be configured to act as a “Shoot House” for simmunition training as well as live fire interactive training with a video screen.

Room 202
Room 202 is a basic classroom, seating up to 38 students at individual desks. This room is connected to room 204 with a removable partition to make this one large classroom. All of our classrooms have the same AV systems, utilizing rear screen projectors, laptops and a PA system. They also have large white boards.
Room 204
Room 204 is another basic classroom, seating up to 38 students at individual desks. This room is dedicated to Virginia Union University students while they are in session. It is attached to room 202 with a removable partition which can be opened up into one large room. This room is identical to Room 202.
Room 245
Room 245 is our tiered classroom. This room is typically used for “Recruit Training” but can be used for other functions when the recruits are not in the building. It has a capacity of 80. All of our classrooms have the same AV systems, utilizing rear screen projectors, laptops and a PA system. They also have large white boards.
Room 247
Room 247 is also a basic classroom which seats up to 35 people. There are 9 tables in that room which can be arranged to fit the need of the event. All of our classrooms have the same AV systems, utilizing rear screen projectors, laptops and a PA system. They also have large white boards.
Police Museum

The Richmond Police Museum is located in the Nancy White Thomas Library which is on the second floor.

Computer Lab
The Computer Lab has 12 learning stations with a teacher terminal. It has an electronic whiteboard/screen.
Gymnasium
Our gymnasium has a three quarter court basketball court that can be used for volleyball. There are many mats that can be placed out for Defensive Tactic’s Training as well as Yoga, wrestling, etc. There is a 2800 square foot physical fitness center located in the rear of the gym with a free weights side as well as a side with ellipticals, stationary bikes, rowing machines, tread mills and other work out machines.
Weight Room

Third floor
The third floor is basically used as a break room. It has several snack machines as well as a small kitchen with fridge, large ice machine and microwave oven. There is seating at tables for up to 60 people. This area can be used to cater in food for functions in the other rooms. Off of the 3rd floor is an outside patio with tables and chairs.
