Safety for Motorcycles, Safety for All
On Friday, several regional jurisdictions gathered at Richmond Raceway with a mission to emphasize the importance of motorcycle safety in Central Virginia.
The effort was led by the Richmond Police Department in hopes of spreading the message of safer roadways for all. RPD Chief Rick Edwards spoke about the many safety measures that the city of Richmond recently added. “Richmond has engineered many traffic calming measures, such as speed tables and roundabouts.,” said Chief Edwards, “and Safety Cameras have been installed in front of schools to automatically cite violators…but motorists are still speeding.”
Also joining the event was the Henrico County Police Chief Eric English, Virginia State Police Sergeant Jessica Shehan, Chesterfield County Police Captain Pete Cimbal, AAA’s Morgan Dean, and Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles’ Mitch Hrdlicka.
The agencies urge motorists to be mindful of their speed and be aware of motorcycles in their surroundings when driving. Road safety is a team effort, and all six agencies are committed to safe roadways for all.

Hey Richmond! As part of the city’s ongoing efforts to better manage speeding in school zones and on Richmond streets, safety cameras have been installed at two elementary schools. Starting March 18, speeders near Linwood Holton or Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts (the initial school zones) will begin receiving summonses in the mail. Please slow down and drive with care.
The camera installation project is a partnership between the Richmond Police Department, the Vision Zero Task Force (under the umbrella of the Department of Public Works) and with the support of the Safe and Healthy Streets Commission, the Richmond City Council, and the Mayor's Office.
The Richmond Police Department received its fifth Advanced GOLD Standard Re-accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) on Saturday, July 27, 2024. The accreditation period pertains to the timeframe of April 2021 to April 2024.
“The CALEA Gold Standard Reaccreditation with Excellence Award recognizes the hard work of the members of the Richmond Police Department and their commitment to public safety,” said Chief Rick Edwards. “Accreditation ensures the department has consistent policies, a formalization of management practices, and accountability through checks and balances through all levels of the agency. I thank our accreditation team for their excellent work throughout this important process.”
CALEA accreditation signifies that an agency has met specific standards of excellence. The Richmond Police Department had to demonstrate compliance with close to 500 standards to earn re-accreditation status. A team of CALEA assessors from around the country visited Richmond this winter and spring. They interviewed department personnel, city directors, Richmond residents and other local agency partners. Agency leadership communicated frequently to address any department concerns, responses and protocols.
