Sales Tax  

The City’s Sales Tax is received by the Department of Finance’s General Accounting Unit. Sales Taxes are collected by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the City’s share is remitted to it. 

Sales Tax Rates 

• Rate: 6.0 percent total Sales Tax for most purchases*, comprised of: 
  • 1.0 percent City of Richmond Sales Tax 
  • 4.3 percent Commonwealth of Virginia Sales Tax 
  • 0.7 percent Commonwealth of Virginia for Transportation 
     
• *1.0 percent reduced rate Sales Tax on food for home consumption (e.g. grocery items) and certain essential personal hygiene items
