- noted historic prestige tracing back to the early English settlers
Nationally recognized for its vitality and New Economy embrace, Richmond's diversified employment base extends from chemical, food and tobacco manufacturing to biotechnology, semiconductors and high-tech fibers. The city consistently ranks among "Best Places to Live and Work in America" in several national publications.

City Seal
The official seal of the city of Richmond is a circle containing a female figure typifying robed justice. The figure holds scales in the left hand and a drawn sword in the right hand. Beneath the figure is the motto "sic itur ad astra" (such is the way to the stars) in Roman characters and the words "City of Richmond, July 19, 1782," in smaller Roman characters.
City Flag
Image: The official city flag is divided into three parts. The upper two-thirds of the flag is a field of blue, the lower one-third is two parallel bars of red of equal widths. There is a thin line of white above each red bar. Centered on the field of blue is a white silhouette of a bateau boatman. Orbiting in an open bottomed arc around the boatman are nine white stars, representing the nine states that were once a part of the State of Virginia’s original territory; Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan.
The City logo has an oval shape with an interpretive design of the city skyline, the James River, and the bridges connecting the community. A rising star dots the "i" in Richmond, symbolizing the city's role as the capital of the Commonwealth.
The city has registered the City logo for protection as a service mark with the State Corporation Commission and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Further, section 2-2.2 of the Code of the city of Richmond prohibits the unauthorized use of the city logo.
