About Richmond's Honorary Street Name Designations
Honorary street names can be found throughout Richmond, and are intended to memorialize individuals for their civic, cultural, humanitarian, or historically significant contributions to the Richmond Community. These designations typically apply to a portion of a street, such as a city block, and are designated by Richmond City Council via the passing of an Ordinance. Honorary street names do not replace the existing name of a street and do not require an alteration to maps or addresses.
Mary W. Thompson
For three decades, Mary White Thompson has been actively involved in the civic well-being of Richmond’s East End. Through her tireless efforts, Ms. Thompson has helped transform neglected, vacant, and abandoned areas into the vibrant, safe, and wholesome communities in she knew in her youth.
In 1993, Mary W. Thompson founded the New Visions Civic League of East End in response to the increased blight in the Fairmount neighborhood, and served for a time as its president. The organization aims to create a community of neighbors helping neighbors, for residents to be able to connect with one-another.
In addition to her work with the New Visions Civic League of East End, Mary W. Thompson has served on the boards of numerous community organizations, including the Board of Directors of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. She has also been involved with community redevelopment and revitalization projects, neighborhood clean-ups, back-to-school drives, and other community events and activities.

The 1100 block of North 22nd Street has been given the honorary designation of Mary W. Thompson Street.
