About Richmond's Honorary Street Name Designations
Honorary street names can be found throughout Richmond, and are intended to memorialize individuals for their civic, cultural, humanitarian, or historically significant contributions to the Richmond Community. These designations typically apply to a portion of a street, such as a city block, and are designated by Richmond City Council via the passing of an Ordinance. Honorary street names do not replace the existing name of a street and do not require an alteration to maps or addresses.
Dr. Charles K. Price
Born November 1, 1938, in Northern Virginia, Dr. Charles Kemper Price began his career in education as a teacher in Portsmouth Public Schools, working up the ranks to school principal. Following this, Dr. Price served with distinction as the first superintendent of the Virginia Rehabilitative School Authority (known today as the Virginia Department of Correctional Education), which provides educational services for youths in state detention centers as well as adults in state correctional facilities.
After retirement, Dr. Price became a dedicated activist and volunteer with numerous Richmond-area environmental and conservation organizations such as the Sierra Club. He played a major role in the creation and upkeep of the Cannon Creek Greenway, a 1.9-mile trail that runs along Richmond-Henrico Turnpike between Valley Road and Brookland Park Boulevard. Dr. Price initiated volunteer cleanups with conservation and civic groups that pulled 20 tons of trash from the site’s ravine and creek bed.
In recognition of his work, Dr. Charles K. Price received several awards and accolades, including the Richmond Gateway 6th Voter District's Citizen of the Year in 2008; City of Richmond's Outstanding Volunteer Award in 2009; Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities' Jesse Reynolds Award for Community Mobilization in 2009; Richmond City Council's Government Public Service Award in 2010; and the Valentine Museum's Richmond History Maker Award for Demonstrating Innovative Solutions in 2012. And in 2019, for his contributions to the civic well-being of the city of Richmond as an advocate for the conservation of Richmond-area parks and green spaces — including the Cannon Creek Greenway, Bandy Field Park, and the James River Park System — Richmond City Council memorialized Dr. Charles K. Price by designating a portion of the Cannon Creek Greenway bicycle and pedestrian trail in his honor.
Dr. Charles K. Price passed away on March 11, 2021, at the age of 82 years old.
