RICHMOND, Va. – As part of the city’s ongoing Vision Zero Initiative to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and severe injuries, the Department of Public Works installed a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) on South Belvidere at Rowe Street (near the Virginia War Memorial). The device will be activated later this week. PHBs are designed to help pedestrians and bicyclists safely cross busy or higher-speed, multi-lane roadways and uncontrolled intersections, making our streets safer and more walkable for everyone. The device provides drivers with clear, actionable signals to improve their awareness and safety.Â
Pedestrians:
- When you are ready to cross, simply press the button to activate the beacon.
- The signal will turn on to alert drivers that a pedestrian intends to cross.
Drivers:
- When the beacon activates, it will go through a sequence of yellow flashing lights, followed by a red signal indicating you must STOP.
- Once the pedestrian has crossed safely, the light will turn off, and you many continue driving.
