About Richmond's Honorary Street Name Designations

Honorary street names can be found throughout Richmond, and are intended to memorialize individuals for their civic, cultural, humanitarian, or historically significant contributions to the Richmond Community. These designations typically apply to a portion of a street, such as a city block, and are designated by Richmond City Council via the passing of an Ordinance. Honorary street names do not replace the existing name of a street and do not require an alteration to maps or addresses.

Larry J. Bland

A talented and accomplished musician, Larry Jerome Bland served as the creative director and leader of The Volunteer Choir for more than 40 years. Many Richmond residents came to know The Volunteer Choir through their annual performances at the Dogwood Dell Amphitheater, where they would draw audiences of more than 12,000 people. As a testament to the group’s prominence and talent, Larry Bland and The Volunteer Choir performed at the inauguration of two Virginia Governors (the Honorable Chuck Robb and the Honorable Ralph Northam), as well as Virginia's Royal Welcome of Queen Elizabeth II during Her Majesty's visit to Richmond in 2007.
