About Richmond's Honorary Street Name Designations
Honorary street names can be found throughout Richmond, and are intended to memorialize individuals for their civic, cultural, humanitarian, or historically significant contributions to the Richmond Community. These designations typically apply to a portion of a street, such as a city block, and are designated by Richmond City Council via the passing of an Ordinance. Honorary street names do not replace the existing name of a street and do not require an alteration to maps or addresses.
Percy and Angie Strickland
In 2002, Percy and Angie Strickland began offering to tutor some of the youth residents of their Church Hill neighborhood on their front porch. The following year, in 2003, they founded Church Hill Activities & Tutoring, Inc. to invest in the lives of aspiring, but disadvantaged, youth by offering tutoring and educational activities to equip them and their communities for success. The organization offers after-school programs, a workforce development program, and the Church Hill Academy in order to support the personal, academic, vocational, and spiritual growth of the youth of Richmond’s East End.
In recognition of their advocacy for educational opportunity, Richmond City Council memorialized Percy and Angie Strickland with an Honorary Street Name Designation in 2018.
Designation Area:
The portion of N Street located between its intersection with North 30th Street and its intersection with North 31st Street has been given the honorary designation of Percy and Angie Strickland Street.
