About Richmond's Honorary Street Name Designations
Honorary street names can be found throughout Richmond, and are intended to memorialize individuals for their civic, cultural, humanitarian, or historically significant contributions to the Richmond Community. These designations typically apply to a portion of a street, such as a city block, and are designated by Richmond City Council via the passing of an Ordinance. Honorary street names do not replace the existing name of a street and do not require an alteration to maps or addresses.
Alfred D. "A. D." Price
Alfred D. Price, known as A. D. Price, was born in 1860 in Hanover County, Virginia. In the late 1870s, A. D. Price moved to Richmond and established a blacksmith shop, which expanded into a livery stable. Mr. Price also set up the A. D. Price Funeral Establishment, a funeral home in the Jackson Ward neighborhood, making Mr. Price one of the first African American funeral directors in Virginia. Over the years, Mr. Price established a small complex of buildings on Leigh Street in Jackson Ward to house the funeral home and its affiliated hearses and stables. While several of these buildings have been demolished over the years, a few are still standing today, including a three-story funeral parlor built in 1902 at 212 East Leigh Street.
In addition to his own entrepreneurship, A. D. Price also served on the boards of directors of several businesses and organizations during his lifetime, including service as a board member of the Mechanics Savings Bank and as president of the Southern Aid Society of Virginia.
A. D. Price passed away on April 9, 1921 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Richmond.

The 600 block of North 3rd Street has been given the honorary designation of A. D. Price Avenue.
