Fulton Gas Works

The old Fulton Gas Works is getting a facelift! The City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities is undertaking a project to remediate and restore the property that once produced natural gas for city streetlights, for future use. The project site, located at 3301 Williamsburg Avenue in the Fulton neighborhood in the east-end of Richmond sandwiched between Main St/Rt. 5 and Williamsburg Rd, harkens back to the days of Richmond's industrial past. Once the property is restored, it will house the offices of Richmond Gas Works.

The project began in spring 2021 for the first phase of remediation, which includes the disassembly and storage of the gasometer, removal (and saving) of the emblems from the broiler building and removal of all above ground structures (to the foundation). The second phase of remediation includes the demolition of the foundations, removal of conduit paths (necessary for the contamination to migrate) and the installation of clean soil cap over the site.
