update sent to content editors 20210623
Attached is the traffic report for the last 30 days. And on my level of analysis I am seeing traffic pattern that I am expecting.
For the first time in 10 years I am seeing the traffic going to online payment centers across the site. Assuming this traffic is an after effect of COVID 19 it may be important to highlight the method of payments in the content. What I am saying is more links to “how do I pay things” may be helpful to your customers.
REMEMBER that the 1 of July 2021 is coming soon and the Legacy Site will stop working.
Two Helpful hints –
- If for some reason you need a special URL after the www.rva.gov/ that is possible but has some tricks to it. When creating NEW content and it needs a special URL you can use the toolbox on the right called URL ALIAS. If you have already created the content and the URL needs to change or the page looks odd after creating the content with a special URL send a Service request in and CC Kit hagen.
- Why, when publishing, do we need to perform a three step process. To remind everyone after you save the page it must be “Submitted” “Approved” and “Published” and a Log message is available for notes. This is to provide the technology to support “More Than 1 Editor has Read This Content Prior To Publishing.” While we are not requiring more than one person review content changes prior to publishing, we strongly encourage that Business units adopt, the practice that the same person that submits the content is not the same person that approves the content. And that only people approved by the department head as able to speak in public for the department are the people that publish said content. To recap:
- Any worker that has access could edit and submit the content on the site
- Someone else should review the edits by going to the page and adding “latest” to the URL https://www.rva.gov/police/national-night-out/latest and check the grammar, spelling and correctness of the content changes. They would then approve said comment.
- Lastly hopefully someone with press professional skills reads the content and states that the content is publishable by setting the moderation state to published.
A lot of content editors are not using this best practice for many reasons, but a single editor is never a good idea. So they have to go through the many steps of editing as the polite request that business practices change to conform to Best Practices.
